In the land of machines...

Once upon a time there was a Synchronous Motor whose name was Torqua. She ran on her father’s supply through her mother, her father being a Synchronous Generator and her mother the Equivalent Impedance of their connection. Till the age of 21, she ran on her father’s supply. She was very happy and synchronized. Until one day her father had a surge attack that reduced his life to a few days. He called for Torqua and said that he wished to see her ‘coupled’ with the Diesel Generator recently installed near them. Torqua loved her father very much so she agreed at once. Soon the Diesel Generator whose name was Volta was introduced to Torqua, he was immediately impressed by her V-curves while Torqua liked his self reliant mode of operation. Although their impedances and input/output characteristics didn’t match, they decided to give it a try. The ceremony of the ‘coupling’ was attended by almost all Electrical machines, devices and elements except one, the DC voltage of excitation, Exide, who had worked for the Synchronous Generator and had had an eye on Torqua for a long time. The coupling was celebrated anyway and soon the two machines started running with synchronization in the path of balanced current.

Everything was perfect for the first few months, and then started the ‘phase shifts’ in their moods. Volta had problems with Torqua always quarrelling and inducing him to improve his power factor. Torqua had complains regarding the new Induction Motor, whose name was Squirrel, installed and coupled temporarily with Volta. Torqua believed that Volta was giving her unnecessary current with a scandalous frequency. Volta defended himself by saying that he treated Squirrel like he treated all other loads. Things got more complex when one day Torqua found Squirrel with her output terminals open and Volta exciting her at the input side. Half of her windings burned with jealousy and anger instantly. Torqua gave Squirrel a cruel ‘Inductive Kick’ and threw Volta back the ‘Slip Ring’ he gave her on their engagement and declared that she would file for divorce right away. Volta tried to contact her but she offered him high resistance and low reactance.

In court they met, Judge Wire was solemn on hearing the plaintiff’s words. He asked Volta to give his statement in defense. Volta explained that he was just helping Squirrel in carrying out a ‘No load test’ so that she could find her no load current and that he was only returning her a favor since she had helped him find the perfect Poles for Torqua for their coupling anniversary. Squirrel was also brought into court who brought other witnesses like the Permanent magnet and Commutator who ran the gift shop. Torqua was very embarrassed when she came to know the truth and raised the ‘admittance’ of her hasty assumptions and apologized to both of them. The file for divorce was nullified. Volta was very glad things were back to normal and they both promised never to fight again.

Squirrel and Torqua became the best of friends and due to the fact that all loads on Volta were now balanced, Squirrel was joined to his supply permanently and so they all lived synchronously ever after. So did the gift shop keepers, by selling the heavy expensive conductors that they received from Squirrel and Volta as bribes and by the way, Squirrel was Exide’s sister.
